July 14, 2014 — On Sunday, June 16, 2013, the Rector Search Committee was commissioned. Last Sunday, just a little over one year later, we celebrated the announcement of our new rector, The Rev. Kelly Kirby. What a busy, wonderful, and rewarding year this has been!
In the commissioning liturgy last June, members of the committee prayed the following:
“Almighty God, we ask your guidance and blessing as we seek a Rector for St. Matthew’s. Be present in our deliberations; make us aware of your will for us; and keep us mindful of our calling to serve your purpose and to witness to your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”
The congregation responded:
“We pledge to you our trust and support, and our constant prayers for your patience, your growth in community, your sense of humor and the work that you are called to do.”
As we reflect on our journey, we can say that God indeed answered our search committee prayer, and the people of St. Matthew’s demonstrated their faithfulness, holding us in prayer and offering continued words of encouragement.
Members of the search committee worked quietly, confidentially, and all were totally committed to our mission. We have shared in a journey that has occurred only a few times in the history of St. Matthew’s, and have been blessed by the experience. We were privileged to have a number of strong candidates and relied on the guidance of the Holy Spirit to identify the person whose gifts best match the needs of St. Matthew’s at this time.
As we look forward to welcoming our new rector and her family, our prayer is that the community of St. Matthew’s will provide an equal measure of support and prayers during this time of transition as was offered during the search process.
